Cost of Gutters for a 2,000 Sq Ft House (2026 Prices)

A 2,000 sq ft home usually needs 140 to 200 feet of gutter. Here is what that costs in each material.

By the HouseCostCalc team · Updated November 3, 2026

A 2,000 square foot house is close to the national average, so it is a good size to use when you are pricing new gutters. But the floor area is only a starting point. What sets the price is the length of the roof edge, the gutter material and how many downspouts you need.

For most 2,000 sq ft homes, the cost of gutters runs about $700 to $6,500 installed, and most homeowners pay $1,400 to $3,000 for aluminum. For a number based on your own roof, use our gutter installation cost calculator.

Gutters run along the eaves, not around every wall. Walk around the house and measure each roof edge where water runs off, or measure from a satellite map. As a rough guide:

House style (2,000 sq ft)Typical gutter lengthDownspouts
Two story, simple gable roof120 to 150 ft4
One story ranch, gable roof160 to 200 ft4 to 6
Hip roof (eaves on all sides)180 to 220 ft5 to 6

Cost by gutter material

MaterialInstalled price per footTotal for about 160 ft
Vinyl$4 to $8$640 to $1,280
Sectional aluminum$6 to $12$960 to $1,920
Seamless aluminum$9 to $16$1,440 to $2,560
Galvanized steel$10 to $20$1,600 to $3,200
Copper$25 to $40$4,000 to $6,400

These totals include downspouts at a basic level. Larger 6 inch gutters, which suit steep or large roofs in heavy rain areas, add about 20 to 30 percent.

What else adds to the bill

  • Old gutter removal: about $1 to $2 per foot, or a flat $150 to $400.
  • Fascia repair: rotten fascia boards must be replaced before new gutters go up, often $6 to $20 per foot.
  • Gutter guards: $3 to $12 per foot depending on the type.
  • Two story height: extra ladder work and safety gear can add 10 to 20 percent.
  • Extra downspouts and extensions: moving water farther from the foundation is cheap insurance against basement leaks.

Repair or replace?

If your gutters are only sagging in one spot or have a few leaking seams, a repair for a few hundred dollars may be enough. If they are rusted through, pulling away along long runs, or more than 20 years old, replacing them is usually the better value. Our guide on how long gutters last shows the typical lifespan of each material.

Why it matters

Overflowing gutters send water into the fascia, the attic and the foundation. That can lead to rot and mold that cost far more than the gutters. If you already see staining on the roof deck, read our breakdown of attic mold remediation cost.

Frequently asked questions

How many feet of gutter does a 2,000 sq ft house need?

Most need 140 to 200 linear feet. A one story ranch has a longer roof edge than a two story home of the same size, so it needs more gutter.

What is the cheapest gutter for a 2,000 sq ft house?

Vinyl is the cheapest at about $4 to $8 per foot installed, so roughly $700 to $1,400. It does not handle heavy snow or very hot sun as well as aluminum.

Is seamless aluminum worth the extra cost?

For most homes, yes. Seamless aluminum has fewer joints to leak, lasts 20 years or more and costs only a little more than sectional aluminum.

How much do downspouts add?

Each downspout adds about $50 to $150 installed. A 2,000 sq ft home usually needs 4 to 6.
